World's Largest Gothic Structure (day 6)

10-April-2002 (Wednesday): It's still raining, but I can't in good conscience delay the posting of Milano Duomo any longer. All roads lead to Duomo, so this is my 2nd or 3rd visit... and it will definitely not be my last. When the blue skies arrive, I'll conduct a more thorough investigation, and will probably post more photos. The view from the roof is supposed to be impressive...

This structure is a tribute to five centuries of artists, artisans, architects, builders, and engineers. Construction took place from 1386 through 1887. There are over 3,000 statues adorning the Duomo, but the golden Madona at the top is the most famous. She has been guarding things since 1744. My guess is her perch atop the highest spire is what inspired a certain pop music artist to change her name in search of similar heights.
