Italian Farmhouse B&B Tenuta del Barone (day 28)

2-May-2002 (Thursday): If you ever need to disappear from the planet, this is the place to go. As far as I can determine, there is no written record of my visit. They only accept cash. And they're in the middle of nowhere!

Tenuta del Barone is a Bed & Breakfast located on an actual farm, in a very small town called Penango. It's in the Monferrato region, near Piemonte, quite well known for it's vineyards. We took the train from Monterosso to Asti (of Asti Spumante fame), where we rented a car. It was fun driving through the countryside, although the rain is back and making the roads a little more interesting. I saw lightning strike nearby, and the resulting orange glow in the field was quickly snuffed by the downpour.

This building dates back to the late 1500's, and the farm has been used to produce livestock, silk worms, quail eggs, fruits, and wines. Today, most of their business comes from the popularity of Agriturismo, which basically means "farm holiday." I think it also means that almost all the food they prepare (and they prepare a lot of food!) must come from local farms.

Here's a much better picture of the estate, taken by someone else on a day without thunderstorms...
