Arriving in Le Cinque Terre: Monte Roso (day 26)

30-April-2002 (Tuesday): Today, we decided to take the train from Milan to Monte Rosso, a coastal town embedded in one of Italy's most unique landscapes. Monte Rosso, together with it's four sister towns (Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore) is one of the five towns that make up Le Cinque Terre (the five villages). This is a gorgeous area, and I can't wait to explore the hiking trails that wend through the hillside vineyards and link the five towns!

Historically, Monte Rosso was a coastal fishing village. Tourism has replaced fishing as the main industry, but the surrounding vineyards are still active (Giumin Cinqueterre Sciacchetra). It's also worth noting that "pesto" was invented in this area, so the pesto sauces should be worth trying...

This area is also known as the Ligurian Riviera. It's a set of ancient seaside villages, suspended high atop the rocky Italian cliffs overloking the Mediterranian. I think it's time for some Campari & Soda, then dinner. Tomorrow, it's time to go exploring!
